Cuba City, Wisconsin Albert K. “Al” Kern, 89, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Friday, August 8, 2014, at home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cuba City with Rev. David Flanagan and Rev. Chad Droessler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Monday at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City. Friends may also call from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home before the service. Al was born on June 12, 1925, in Garner, Iowa, the son of Kasper and Elizabeth (Simon) Kern. He married Elizabeth A. “Betty” Dieser on May 7, 1949. She preceded him in death on December 24, 2011. Al was a WWII veteran proudly serving his country in the US Navy. He was honored to go on the honor flight to Washington DC and had a special place in his heart for all who served their country both now and in the past. After his discharge he worked for Northern Natural Gas from 1951-1983. After retirement he was the chief inspector on the 42” gas line until 2004. He enjoyed working for Kevin and Diane Casey at the funeral home from 1993 until 2000. Al’s Catholic faith was a major part of his life and he was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Rose of Lima Church. Faith, family and friends were very important to Al. He enjoyed morning coffee at Nick’s Café. Al enjoyed all sports, including the Cuba City Cubans, the Wisconsin Badgers and the Green Bay Packers. He never missed an event for his children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Michael A. (Roberta) Kern, of Deerfield, and Gregory A. (Kate) Kern, of Cuba City; a son-in-law, Charles (fiancée, Malinda Ahmann) Stewart, of Cuba City; six grandchildren, Christopher (Kara) Kern, Kevin (Mary) Kern, Stacey (Steve) Steinhoff, Kyle Kern, Ryan Kern, and Alex Stewart; and eight great-grandchildren, Quinn and Cooper Kern and baby girl on the way, Aydan, Cassidy and Makenna Kern, Brody and Grant Steinhoff. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Stewart; an infant son, Michael Joseph Kern; two granddaughters, Michelle and Malinda Kern; two great-grandsons, Jack and Gage Kern; his brothers, Adam, George, Ambrose and Joe Kern; and a sister, Annie Sheedy An Albert K. “Al” Kern Memorial Fund has been established.
