Alberta Ludwig

June 11, 1918 — November 25, 2008

Alberta was born on June 11, 1918, in Dickeyville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frank and Wilhelmina (Wilhelm) Wallenhorst. She was the sixth child of Frank and Wilhelmina Wallenhorst. She graduated in 1936 from St. Andrew’s High School in Tennyson, Wisconsin. She married Rudolph Ludwig on June 16, 1937, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dickeyville, Wisconsin. Alberta farmed most of her married life with her husband in the Kieler area. He preceded her in death on September 17, 1969. A few years after his death Alberta moved to Kieler, where she kept busy helping her family. She attended mass daily. She was an avid Euchre player. Alberta enjoyed crocheting afghans and quilting. She loved gardening and canning. Alberta moved to Dubuque, Iowa in 2003 to Alverno Apartments and Stonehill Care Center in 2007. Alberta was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Council of Catholic Women, the Apostolate for the Handicapped, the Kieler Senior Citizens, and the NAIM Organization. Survivors include four sons and one daughter; Larry (Kay) Ludwig, of Dubuque, Carol (Dan) Vosberg, of Hazel Green, Marvin (Phyllis) Ludwig, of Cuba City, Ronald (JoAnn) Ludwig, of Dubuque, and Earl Ludwig, of Hazel Green; former daughter-in-law Jenny Ludwig of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Marion Wallenhorst of Platteville; many nieces and nephews; 16 grandchildren,16 great grandchildren and one on the way, and 9 step great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters Margaret Schroeder, Frances Wiederholt, and Dorothy Menne; three brothers, Clarence, Adolph, and Edwin Wallenhorst; sister-in-law- and brother-in-law Francis and Margaret Wiederholt; and a daughter-in-law, Rita (Helbing) Ludwig. The family wishes to thank Fr. Bernie Rott, Fr. Francis Steffen, Dr. Kirkendall, Dr. Schope, the staff at Alverno Apartments, Hospice of Dubuque, the Stonehill Care Center for their care and compassion to Alberta and her family. The death of our mother touches us deeply. Her mood of her last days was inspirational. A memorial for Alberta C. Ludwig has been established.
