Alfred was born on July 14, 1924, in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Bertha (Weigel) English. Alfred had eight siblings. He grew up mostly in poverty. Alfred graduated from Strong Vincent High School, Erie, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation he was drafted into the US Army. One of his missions took him to Omaha Beach in Normandy the day after D-Day. Alfred received the Bronze Star Medal along with four additional bronze stars representing participation in all four of the major European campaigns. Using the GI Bill, Alfred attended college at the University of Michigan and graduated with honors. He later received his Masters Degree, with honors, from the University of Chicago. Alfred served as chairman, president, and CEO of Boss Manufacturing in Kewanee, Illinois. Alfred married Shirley Newton in 1951. Shirley passed away in 2001 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. They had over 50 years together in marriage. Together they had three children, Brad English, of California, Cathy (Dr. Bob) Schroeder, of Cuba City, and Jeff (Missy) English, of California; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Alfred had a strong Christian faith and attending church played an important role in his life. Alfred is best known as an accomplished armature artist working in transparent watercolors, and as a loving husband and father, as well as the greatest grandfather. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the “Café” at the First Congregational Church in Dubuque. He so loved serving and feeding the needy at the “Café.” Special thanks to Hospice of Dubuque and the kind staff at Sunset Park Place of Dubuque.
