Dick was born on May 2, 1944, in Cuba City, Wisconsin, the son of Earl and Genevieve (Kittoe) Bastian. He married Lois K. Alderson on February 17, 1962, in Scales Mound, Illinois. Dick attended Benton High School. He served in the US Army (1962-1965) and was stationed in Korea. From 1984-1993 he and Lois, along with Jim and Barb Lacke, operated Cole Acres Golf Course. This foursome also built Birchwood Golf Course. Dick loved spending time with his family and friends whether it was playing cards, fishing, or just exchanging stories. Many mornings Dick and Lois could be found cat fishing on the Mississippi or wherever the fish were biting. He will be missed by his family, his fishing friends, his card playing buddies, but not by the catfish who feared him. Survivors include his wife, Lois; a daughter, Pam (special friend, Mike Tranel) McCauley, of Kieler; three sons, Russ (Janet), of Benton, Brad (Angie), of Oregon, WI, and Todd, of Benton; a sister, Judy (Carl) Crabtree, of Florida; a brother, Bill (Sharon) Bastian, of Benton; and eleven grandchildren, Dayna and Ali (fiance, Nate Moris) McCauley, Nathan Bastian, Tyler and Brandon Lesandrini, Isaac Lindert, Breanna, Bailey and Brooke Bastian, and Payton and Wyatt Bastian. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Eleanor Alderson, of Cuba City; a brother-in-law, Lee Alderson, of Benton; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barb Lacke; a brother-in-law, Jim Lacke; and a sister-in-law, Jane Alderson. A Dick Bastian Memorial Fund has been established.
