Cuba City, Wisconsin Cletus R. Gile, 86, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Sunday, September 11, 2011, at Southwest Health Center Hospital in Platteville. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2011, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cuba City with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City where the parish wake service will be at 2:45 p.m. Friends may also call from 8:30-9:45 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home before the service. Cletus was born on November 10, 1924, in Boscobel, Wisconsin, the son of Clifford and Anna (Steadle) Gile. He married Mary C. “Sally” Byrne on January 5, 1943. She preceded him in death on February 12, 2009. Cletus and his wife Sally moved to Cuba City in 1946 where they purchased the Carr Cheese Factory, where the family still makes cheese today. There they raised ten children and Cletus continued to make cheese until 2001 when he suffered a stroke. Cletus not only made cheese along with his son Tim, but farmed, and sold insurance with his son Tom. He served on the board and as the president of Darlington Mutual Insurance up until 2002. He was also past president of the Marketing Association of America, a Green Bay, Wisconsin cheese marketing group for several years. Cletus was a member of St. Rose Parish and Knights of Columbus Council #765. Survivors include five daughters, Sharon (Ron) Magee, of Dickeyville, Mary (Roger) Slaats, of Cuba City, Susan (Bill) Porter, of Bettendorf, Iowa, Sally Jo (Glenn) Kinch, of Mineral Point, and Phyllis (Clem) Wiegman, of Livingston; four sons, Richard (Diane) Gile, of Hazel Green, Thomas (Gloriann) Gile and Tim (Diane) Gile, both of Cuba City, and Ken (Nora) Gile, of Palatine, Illinois; a son-in-law, Jim Glynn, of Fort Atkinson; three sisters, Gertrude Townsend, of Shullsburg, Mary (Bob) McCoy, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jeanine (Don) Otting, of Cascade, Iowa; a brother, William Gile, of Shullsburg; 31 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Kramer of Cascade, Iowa, and Margaret Mc Coy, of Janesville, Wisconsin. Cletus is also survived by his faithful dog and companion, Ozzie. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Maureen, on October 25, 2004; his parents, Clifford and Anna Gile; and five brothers, Clifford, James, Charles, Robert, and Jack. The family would like to thank the Health Care Select staff, Dr. Connolly, and the nurses at Southwest Health Center for excellent care provided for Cletus. A Cletus R. Gile Memorial Fund has been established.
