Hazel Green, Wisconsin Daniel W. "Dan" Berning, 69, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, died Friday, January 3, 2014, at home with his loving wife at his side. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler with Rev. Bernard Rott officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center where the parish rosary will be at 2:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at the parish center before the service. Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is in charge of arrangements. Dan was born on June 27, 1944, in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, the son of Edward H. and Mary Ellen (Heitkamp) Berning. He married Doris Droeszler on September 7, 1968, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler. Dan was a farmer and worked at AY McDonald Manufacturing, retiring in 2010. Dan was a supervisor for the Jamestown Township, and a member of the Immaculate Conception Holy Name Society and Catholic Financial. Faith, family and farm were the most important to Dan. He loved to be outside farming, caring for his sweet corn, hunting, fishing, and giving his grandchildren Ranger rides. Dan also enjoyed time with his friends. Survivors include his wife, Doris; a daughter, Deanna (Steve) Ehrlich, of Hazel Green; three sons, Dale (Tina) Berning, of Hazel Green, Daryl (Tina) Berning, of Cuba City, and Dwaine (Sarah) Berning, of Kieler; eleven grandchildren, Nathan & Natalie Berning, Dustin Berning, Maggie & Cooper Allen, Isabelle, Avery and Laney Ehrlich, and Evelyn, Amelia and Ehli Berning; three sisters, Carol (Jim) Weber, of Platteville, Joanne Tobin, of Dubuque, and Mary (Phil) Austin, of Monroe; three brothers, David (Marie) Berning, of Freeport, Illinois, Charlie (Phyllis) Berning, of Menominee, Illinois, and Marty (Sheri) Berning, of Hazel Green; and his in-laws, Jerome and Mary Lou Puls, of Cuba City; George and Elaine Portzen, of Dubuque, Franny and Deb Droeszler, of Hazel Green, Jim and Janet Dietzel, of Kieler, Eldie and Ann Droeszler, of Hazel Green, Joe and Rita Placke and Dan and Lisa Droeszler, both of Cuba City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Mary Ellen Berning; his father and mother-in-law, Francis and Rosalia Droeszler; a brother-in-law, Maurie Tobin; and a grandson, Brody Ehrlich. A Daniel W. "Dan" Berning Memorial Fund has been established. A special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque especially Barb and Kathy, and to all those who gathered Monday night to say the rosary.
