East Dubuque, Illinois Edward A. “Ed” Staskal, 75, of East Dubuque, Illinois, formerly of Boscobel and Hazel Green, Wisconsin, passed away at home on Sunday, June 12, 2011, following a courageous battle with myelodyplastic syndrome, a form of leukemia. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, with Pastor Ed Jones officiating. Burial will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Boscobel Public Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Casey Funeral Home & Cremations Services in Cuba City, Wisconsin. Friends may also call from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at the church before the service. Ed was born on December 26, 1935, in Hickory Grove Township, Fennimore, Wisconsin, the son of John Jacob Staskal and Tressa Lucy (Ricks) Staskal. He completed his elementary and middle school years at a one room schoolhouse in Fennimore called Breezy Hill School. He graduated from Boscobel High School in 1953. Ed served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany from 1954-1956. He was an active member of the American Legion Post #6 in Dubuque, Iowa. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Hazel Green. Ed married Charlene Anne Frey on November 2, 1957, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Boscobel. To their union they were blessed with seven children. Ed worked at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works for 35 ½ years, from July 1956 until his retirement in February 1992. He was also a member of the United Auto Workers Local 94. After his retirement, Ed and Charlene took up RV’ing, spending the winters in Texas and Arizona, and traveling across the United States. While on their trips, they enjoyed spending time with old friends and meeting new ones. Ed enjoyed golfing, playing cards, camping, and spending time with his family. He was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan. In his earlier years, one of Ed’s passions was playing the drums in numerous local country and western bands. Ed leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife and soul mate, Charlene, his perfect companion for 53 years. Charlene’s dedication to Eddie was truly crucial the last six months of his life. He will also be greatly missed by his children, Terry (Teressa) Staskal, of Madison, WI, Jerry (Mary) Staskal, of Lena, IL, Vicki (Bob) Halverson, of Edgerton, WI, John (Sandra) Staskal, of San Jose, CA, Ellen (Terry) Burkholder, of Hazel Green, WI, and Amy (Kory) Tersinar, of Marion, IA; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; a brother, Frederick (Madeline) Staskal, of Boscobel: and a very special family member, Colleen Brandt, of Kearney, NE, who is like a daughter. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Christine Kay; a granddaughter, Maddeson Elizabeth Tersinar; two sisters and their spouses, Leata (Ervin) Hardy and Eva (Charles) King; a brother and his spouse, Leonard (Rowena) Staskal; a niece, Jean (King) Nugent; and nephews, Ervin J. Hardy and Lloyd Hardy. In lieu of flowers an Edward A. Staskal Memorial Fund has been established. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Matthew Kirkendall and his nurse, Kate, Dr. Mark Hermann and his staff, nurses Dawn and Cheri from the 3rd floor Pain Clinic at The Finley Hospital, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Traci, Lisa, and Megan, who helped Ed and Charlene during his illness. Their loving care and compassion will be remembered and is greatly appreciated by the family.
