James Douglas Goldberg, 48, of Homewood, IL, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010, at Vitas Hospice, Chicago Heights, IL. A memorial service honoring him will be 4-6 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2010, at St. John’s Church, 301 Cottage Grove Avenue, Glenwood, IL 60425, with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. The family will greet visitors before and after the prayer service. Friends may also call from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Casey Funeral Home, 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City, Wisconsin 53807, concluding with a Masonic service at 12:00 noon. Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cuba City with burial in St. Peter’s Church Cemetery, Elk Grove, Wisconsin. James was born in Port Washington, WI, on September 8, 1961, the son of Harvey A. and Rachel Y. (Stanzil) Goldberg. As a youth, Jim was active in DeMolay and Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Port Washington High School in 1980 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1984. His entire professional career was with Lehigh Hanson (formerly Material Service Corporation of General Dynamics). On August 10, 1984, he was united in marriage to Joan Alinda Brandt of Cuba City, WI. Jim and Joan were blessed with two daughters, Kathryn Jane and Elizabeth Rose, and were happily married until Joan’s death in 1996. Living in Homewood, Jim loved gardening and was delighted when their yard was recognized as one of the lovely gardens in the community. Jim was honored with numerous Beautification Awards by the Village of Homewood and in 2001 was granted permanent landmark status. He also loved his family, American history, and the “M.A.S.H.” TV series. Jim was a collector of historic explosive related equipment used in the mining industry and an enthusiastic rock collector. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Homewood, IL, Ozaukee Lodge No. 17 F. & A.M. in Port Washington, WI, the International Society of Explosives Engineers and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. Mr. Goldberg is survived by his daughters, Kathryn of Platteville, WI, and Elizabeth of Homewood, IL; his mother, Rachel Goldberg of Thiensville, WI; his siblings, Gary (Beth) Goldberg of Castle Rock, CO, Bonnie (Robert) Babich of Channahon, IL, Raymond (Kandace) Goldberg of Germantown, WI, and their children; and his aunts and uncles, Patricia Goldberg of Des Moines, IA, and Jeanette and Rudy Pederson of Monico, WI. Mr. Goldberg is further survived by his in-laws, Francis and Mary Jane Brandt of Cuba City, WI, Alan Brandt of Darlington, WI, Roger (Nancy) Brandt of New Berlin, WI, Gary Brandt of Darlington, WI, Donna (Mark) Brokowski of Evanston, IL, and Ken Brandt of Imperial, CA; as well as many other relatives and friends. Mr. Goldberg was also preceded in death by his father and his grandparents. Flowers are welcome, or alternatively the family suggests memorials to the American Brain Tumor Association at abta.org.
