John Peter Salzmann, son of Adolph and Anna (Averkamp) Salzmann, was born on October 26, 1928, in rural Cuba City, Wisconsin. He married the love of his life, Mary T. Martin, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Shullsburg, Wisconsin, on May 29, 1956. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2017. John served in the Korean War for the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan, where he made several life-long friendships. He returned to the family farm where he worked for many years. Later he worked in numerous factories, retiring from John Deere Dubuque Works in 1983. John completed his working career at the Sinsinawa Mound, his favorite position being a driver for the campus. After he retired from Sinsinawa, he continued his love of driving and service for others as a volunteer driver for the Grant County Aging and Disability Resource Center. John was a lifetime member of the VFW, Riemenapp-Averkamp-Stepflug Post 6455, and American Legion Post 104 in Dickeyville and Kieler area. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. John was best known as a caring, helpful person. He found a way to enjoy whatever he was doing. He was a light-hearted, peaceful gentleman, always ready with a laugh, happy to play cards; but above all, he was committed to his family and his faith. Survivors include his children, Janice (James) Johnson, of Dickeyville, Mark (Tami) Salzmann, of DeForest, Don (Nancy) Salzmann, of Platteville, and Lisa (Mike) Mowbray, of DeForest; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Rita (Edward) McKeon; and sisters-in-law, Cecilia Keleher, Anna Marie Hessling, Rosie Keleher and Helen Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph (Lillian) and Father Edmund Salzmann; four sisters, Sister Clara Salzmann, Marian (Irvin) Lange, Catherine (Arnold) Lange, and Helena (William) Lawinger; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Mary’s parents; and five nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Park Place Memory Care for all the love and care they have given to our father in this past year, and Southwest Health Center for all their compassionate care to Dad and our family. All of these people are angels among us.
