Judith E. Brever Miles

Dubuque, Iowa Judith E. (Corey) Brever Miles, 75, of Dubuque, Iowa, went home to her Lord on Thursday, November 22, 2012, after a long fight against cancer. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2012, at Resurrection Church in Dubuque with Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Lyons, Wisconsin. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City, Wisconsin, where the parish wake service will be at 4:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 8:30-10:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Judith was born on July 27, 1937, in Genoa City, Wisconsin, the daughter of Elmer and Rose (Miller) Corey. She married James C. Brever on August 17, 1957. He preceded her in death on April 20, 1970. Judith later married James F. Miles on April 14, 1973. He preceded her in death on September 18, 2002. Judy lived in Lyons, Wisconsin, for many years before moving to Hazel Green, Wisconsin, and then later to Dubuque, Iowa. Judy received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in education from UW-Whitewater. She devoted her professional career to education, spending almost 43 years as a teacher and administrator in both public and Catholic schools in Wisconsin. She also spent 12 years as a member of the Southwestern Wisconsin School board; ten of those years as president. She loved children, no matter whose they were, and was a strong advocate for their education. After retiring in 2002 she worked at Sadlier Publishing and finished her working years as an assistant at Martin Accounting. Judy also owned and operated JM Tax Service for 42 years. She loved to read, travel and be with her family and friends. She was a devout Catholic who tried to live by her Lord’s Way every day and thanked Him for allowing her a good life. Judy was a volunteer in many of the activities of her parish, Church of the Resurrection, serving as Reader Coordinator, reader, Eucharist Minister in church, the hospital and for the homebound, and Sacristan among other duties. She also volunteered at Presentation Lantern, New Beginnings Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and Bell Tower Theatre. Survivors include: a daughter, Rebecca Salazar, of Dubuque; her grandchildren, Jessica (Oscar) Garcia, of Carpentersville, IL, Ashly Galinda, of Delavan, WI, and Maria Salazar, of Dubuque; her great-grandchildren, Niqitia, Rebecca, Brandon and Adan Garcia, Angeline, Rafael and Samuel, Oscar and Angel; her stepchildren, Catherine Miles of Delavan, WI, and Cynthia Murdock, of Troy Center, WI; her step-grandchildren, Erin (Ryan Sie) and Robert James, of Troy Center, WI; a step-great-grandson, Miles Sie; her sisters, Lynn (Art) Kohley, of Woodstock, IL, and Anne (Jim) Jones, of New Mexico; her brothers, William (Deb) Corey, of Lake Geneva, WI, and John (Nancy) Corey, of Monroe, WI; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands, Judy was preceded in death by her parents, including her birth father, Earl Huffine; a son, James Brever Miles; a stepson, Lawrence Miles; a grandson, Nicolas Manriquiz; her sisters, Katherine Floyd, Elaine Corey, and Rosemary Huffine; and a brother, Charles. A special thanks to her traveling buddies, Cari Simison, Sharon Read and Jan Kunert, as well as all of the wonderful staff and parishioners at Resurrection who provided so much support and prayers during the past couple of years. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Judith’s name to Resurrection Parish, Southwestern Schools, or the American Cancer Society.
