Karen A. Lyon, 81, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City, Wisconsin, is assisting the family.
Karen was born on April 24, 1943, in Janesville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ernest and Edith “Dorothy” (Madsen) Wolcott. Karen earned a Master’s Degree in Education from UW-Whitewater, and taught English and Typing at Southwestern High School in Hazel Green for over 30 years.
Karen grew up on a farm in Milton, Wisconsin, and was a true caretaker of animals. She was never without a pet, and shared her home with numerous dogs and cats over the years. Her dog, Olivia, was her most recent companion. Karen enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and shared her passion for animal care with them. Karen was an avid reader. She also cherished her lifelong friendship with Bonnie Klitzkie and spending time with Lois Harvey, a fellow teacher who assisted Karen in her later years.
Karen is survived by her children, Matthew (Teri) Lyon, Tampa, FL, and Becky (Calvin) Gatch, Platteville, WI; her brother, Rick (Eileen) Wolcott, Castle Valley, Utah; five grandchildren, Steven Lyon and Daisy, Abby, Calvin IV and Katie Gatch; and her beloved dog, Olivia.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Karen’s abundant love for animals and their well-being was evident to all who knew her. In lieu of services, those wishing to honor Karen’s memory may send donations in her name to the Grant County Humane Society at 222 Roosevelt St., Lancaster, WI 53813. Memorials may also be sent to the funeral home at 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City, WI 53807.
