LaVern was born on May 30, 1919, in Dickeyville, Wisconsin, the son of Ireneus and Caroline (Kruser) Splinter. He married Roselin Jansen on October 17, 1944. LaVern left school before he completed eighth grade to take over his uncle’s farm. He farmed there until his retirement. Besides farming he was also a self-taught electrician and plumber. As a young man LaVern served mass for Father Wernerus and helped him build the Dickeyville Grotto. LaVern was a charter member of the Dickeyville-Paris Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years and a past member of the Dickeyville Village Board. Survivors include his wife, Roselin, of Dickeyville; five daughters, Carol Weland, of Dubuque, Jane and Mary Splinter, both of Platteville, Rita (Gary) Hingtgen, of Kieler, and Donna (Tom) Covert, of Platteville; three sons, LaVern Splinter Jr, of Platteville, David (Diane) Splinter, of Dickeyville, and Ken (Cathy) Splinter, of Kieler; two sisters, Loretta Burbach, of Cuba City, and Bernadette (Al) Droessler, of Kieler; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ireneus and Caroline (Kruser) Splinter; two sisters, Luetta Droessler and Lucille Granville; three brothers, Clarence, Bill and Ira Jr; a grandson, Jesse Splinter; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Memorials may be given to the Dickeyville-Paris Fire Department.
