Cuba City, Wisconsin Mary Ellen Birkett, 76, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Cuba City with Pastor Dan Verdegan officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Friday at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City. Friends may also call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church before the service. Mary Ellen was born on July 22, 1938, in Benton, Wisconsin, the daughter of George and Gertrude (Bennett) Sheffer. She graduated from Benton High School. Mary Ellen married Paul Birkett on August 28, 1964, at the United Methodist Church in Cuba City. She worked at the Cuba City Hospital, Feehan's Pharmacy, and had an in home daycare. Mary Ellen was a member of the Cuba City United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church choir and a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Cuba City Lioness, the Cuba City Fair & Picnic Committee, the Eastern Star, and Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association. Mary Ellen was a very caring and giving person. She was "the hands and feet of God on this earth" type of person. Mary Ellen had unwavering faith, truly a witness of her faith and a person of sacrifice. She loved family and friend gatherings and attending all of her grandchildren's events. Mary Ellen was a faithful wife, caring mother and a proud grandmother. Survivors in addition to her husband, Paul, include her children, Julie (Alan) Piper, of Dodgeville, and Dr. Steven (Tina) Birkett, of Fennimore; four grandchildren, Maggie and Drew Piper, and Brianna and Matthew Birkett; two brothers-in-law, Ron (Margaret) Birkett, and Jack Robson, both of Cuba City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law, Donald Birkett; a sister-in-law, Maxine Robson; and a great-nephew, Samuel Straub. A Mary Ellen Birkett Memorial Fund has been established.
