Mary Juanita Swift

March 2, 1925 — July 19, 2024

Platteville, Wisconsin

Mary Juanita Swift, 99, of Platteville, Wisconsin, formerly of Benton and Shullsburg, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully Friday, July 19, 2024 at Southwest Health Center in Platteville, surrounded by her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Church, Benton, Wisconsin, with Rev. David Flanagan and Deacon Bill Bussan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9-10:45 a.m. Friday at the church prior to the funeral service. Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is assisting the family.

Juanita was born on March 2, 1925, in Logan, Utah, the daughter of John and Ila (Barker) Burke. The family moved to Shullsburg, where Juanita graduated from high school. While working at the Shullsburg Post Office, she met her future husband, Joseph “Jerry” Swift. They were united in marriage on May 14, 1946, at St. Matthew’s Church, Shullsburg, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on September 6, 2001.

Juanita was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. In the 1960’s, she began working for Hartzell’s Grocery Store in Benton, followed by driving cars for Tri-State Auto Auction Services. She was a member of Fortnightly, the Altar Society and Foresters. Juanita was known for her fun sense of humor and a love of games, especially Bingo and cards. She could often be found retelling amusing stories and singing silly songs, if she wasn’t in the middle of a card game – or sometimes even if she was!

Juanita is survived by a daughter, Donna Perkins, Platteville; three sons, Ronald (Janet) Swift, Menominee, IL, Phil (Sandy) Swift, Platteville, and Steve Swift, Belmont, WI; a sister, Barb Foley, Cuba City, WI; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, F. Gerald “Jerry” (Doris) Burke and John “Jack” (Vivian, Dee) Burke; a brother-in-law, Ron Foley; one great-grandchild, Leonard; and Jerry’s sisters and brothers.

The family would like to thank the staff of Our House Assisted Living and Dr. Jeffrey White and staff for their care of Juanita.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Juanita’s name may be sent to the funeral home at 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City, WI 53807.
