Cuba City, Wisconsin Ronald G. "Lefty" Birkett, 75, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cuba City with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Monday at Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City where the parish wake service will be at 2:45 p.m. Friends may also call from 9-9:45 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home before the service. Ron was born on December 4, 1941, in Cuba City, Wisconsin, the son of Homer and Lois (Dent) Birkett. He married Margaret Galligan on July 14, 1962, in Cuba City. Ron graduated from Cuba City High School in 1959 and from Platteville State College with both BA and MA degrees. His first teaching job was in Lodi for one year, and then he was building principal at Shullsburg for eight years. He was an American Family Insurance Agent in Blanchardville for 25 years. Ron coached grade school basketball at Shullsburg and helped coach football in Shullsburg and Pecatonica. He was a member of the Cuba City and Shullsburg fire departments and served as a fireman and EMT in Blanchardville for over 35 years. Ron and Margaret moved back to Cuba City in 2002 where he mowed grass for the City of Cuba City until health required him to retire. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Cuba City; a daughter, Patti (Heath) Miller, of Montello, WI; a son, David J. (Kandie) Birkett, of Lancaster; four grandchildren, Sarah, Garrett and Erika Birkett, and Brooklyn Miller; a brother, Paul Birkett, of Cuba City; two brothers-in-law, Jack Robson, of Cuba City, and James (Donna) Galligan, of Perry, IA; two sisters-in-law, Anne (Alan) Brewer, of Dayton, OH, and Jean Galligan, of Cecil, WI; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Pat Robson; a brother, Donald "Roundy" Birkett; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Birkett; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary and David Dall, Richard and Jane Galligan, and Robert Galligan; a niece, Laura Dall; and a nephew, Kevin Galligan. A Ronald G "Lefty" Birkett Memorial Fund has been established.
