Shirley was born on August 2, 1938, on the family farm in Hazel Green, to Edward and Wilda (Lolwing) Splinter. She graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1956. Shirley was united in marriage to Charles Richardson on April 25, 1959, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Hazel Green. He preceded her in death on November 18, 2011.
From the age of 18, Shirley worked at the Hazel Green Hospital until its closing. She was an avid Wheel of Fortune watcher and a dedicated supporter of the Chicago Cubs. Her love for baseball was unmatched, and she spent many joyous afternoons watching games, always cheering for her favorite team. She also had a special bond with her brother, Donald, as they were Irish Twins. Shirley's cats, PK and Chewy, were her cherished companions. She was known for her devotion to her family and her church, which were the cornerstones of her life.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Jackie (Troy Brown) Richardson, Hazel Green; four siblings, Donald Splinter, Hazel Green, June Splinter Lynch Price and Mary (Jack) Lovell, both of Dubuque, IA, and Joyce (Wayne) Fowler, Cuba City, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law, Donna Mae Splinter; and two brothers-in-law, James Lynch and Jerry Price.
The family wishes to thank all the family, friends and neighbors who looked after Shirley, especially her “Angels on Earth”, Rita Fleege, Linda Vosberg, Elaine Timmerman and Lois Harvey. The family also wishes to thank the incredible staff of MercyOne third floor.
Mom, every night when I say the Angel of God, I am comforted by the fact that the Angel is you. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, thank you for taking her home.
