Sister Mary Margaret “Penny” Smith, OP, died May 22, 2024, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. Her burial was held May 24 in St. Clara Cemetery, Sinsinawa, Wis. Her wake and funeral Mass will take place May 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at St. Dominic Villa. Casey-McNett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
She was born Dec. 18, 1937, to Alfred and Margaret (McCoy) Smith in Chicago, Ill. She professed vows with the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in 1961 and received the religious name of Sister Marie Albert. She graduated from Rosary College, River Forest, Ill., with a BA in chemistry and received her MA in religious studies from Providence College, R.I.
Sister Penny’s ministry was dedicated to education. She taught at St. John’s Cathedral High School, Milwaukee, Wis., and at Aquin High School, Freeport, Ill. She was director of religious education at St. Thomas Villanova Parish, Palatine, Ill., and served as associate director of religious education for the Archdiocese of Mobile, Ala. Sister Penny was also co-founder and volunteer at St. John Food Pantry, Ozark, Ala.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by cousins and her Dominican Sisters. Memorials may be made to the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, 585 County Road Z, Sinsinawa, Wis., or given online at www.sinsinawa.org/donate
