Sister Mary Schlehuber, OP, died June 23, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Manor in Footville, Wisconsin. She was one of six children born to Clarence and Veronica (Scanlon) Schlehuber in Peoria, Illinois. She is survived by one sister, Claire Reilly, of Mansfield, Texas; nieces; nephews; and her Sinsinawa Dominican family. Her funeral will be at Sinsinawa in early July. Casey-McNett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mary entered the Sinsinawa Dominicans in 1947, and was given the name Sister Mary Ania at reception into the congregation. Sister Mary earned a master’s degree in education in guidance and counseling from Edgewood College in Madison. For 30 years, she taught elementary school in the following states: Illinois, Wisconsin and California. Sister Mary, after study in clinical pastoral education, embarked on many years of ministry as chaplain at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
She was warm and able to be present to the needs of those in front of her. Sister Mary returned to Sinsinawa in 2013, bringing her loving ways. In 2019, she moved to St. Elizabeth Manor. In her application to the Sinsinawa Dominicans 76 years ago she wrote, “I love God with a love that demands everything.”
