Sr. Stephana Garvey Op

Sister Stephana Garvey, OP, died Thursday, December 28, 2017, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2018, at the Sinsinawa Motherhouse. A wake service will be held there at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018. She ministered for 38 years as a teacher in primary grades. She taught for six years at St. Robert School in Shorewood, WI. Her later teaching assignments were at Queen of Peace, Madison, WI; St. Barnabas, Chicago, IL; St. Thomas Aquinas, Milwaukee, WI; St. Peter, Oshkosh, WI; St. Philip the Apostle, Northfield, IL; Incarnation, Minneapolis, MN; St. Vincent Ferrer, River Forest, IL; and Catholic Consolidated School, Lock Haven, PA. For seven years she served as the religious education coordinator at Sts. Faith, Hope, and Charity School in Winnetka, IL. From 1993 to 2001, she ministered at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL. From 2001 to 2006, she served in the child care center at Dominican University, River Forest, IL. She returned to the Sinsinawa Motherhouse in 2006, joining the community at St. Dominic Villa in 2009. Sister Stephana was born on Sept. 29, 1926, in LaCrosse, WI, to Francis and Elizabeth (Kane) Garvey. She is survived by a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Nedzi; a brother, Kay Garvey; nieces and nephews; and by her Dominican Sisters.
