Stella M. McDermott, 92, of Benton, Wisconsin, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at St. Patrick’s Church, Benton, Wisconsin, with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends and family may call from 3 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 19 at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, Wisconsin, where there will be a Parish Rosary Service at 2:40 p.m. Friends may also call from 9-10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the service.
Stella was born on September 30, 1931 in Balltown, Iowa, the daughter of John and Veronica (Hansen) Habel. She married James J. “Bert” McDermott on June 25, 1960. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1979.
Stella enjoyed gardening. She was proud of all the tomatoes she canned and sold by the bushel, always making sure she had enough slicing tomatoes to donate to the Fireman’s Labor Day Picnic in Benton. Stella enjoyed her chickens and picking up eggs to sell. She loved to can and freeze lots of fruits and vegetables grown in her garden. She enjoyed bingo and euchre. After a doctor’s appointment in Dubuque, her car would automatically turn into the casino. Stella was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Benton. She enjoyed watching her kids and especially her grandkids’ sporting events. She was a fan of the Benton Zephyrs, Cuba City Cubans, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers basketball teams.
Stella is survived by two daughters, Rose McDermott, Prairie du Chien, WI, and Theresa (Bob) Salzmann, Dickeyville, WI; three sons, Jim, Rodney and Richard McDermott, all of Benton; five grandchildren, Bradley (Manty Escoto) McNett, Brian (Katie) McNett, Jacob (Abbey Jones) Salzmann, Megan Salzmann, and Katie (Pyzer) Pearce; one great-grandchild, Madison Rose McNett; and a brother-in-law, Loras Clemen.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Patrick McDermott; a son-in-law, Todd McNett; and her siblings, Rose Marie Habel, Benny (Kay) Habel, Cyril (Florence) Habel, and Darlene Clemen.
In lieu of flowers, a Stella M. McDermott Memorial Fund has been established. Memorials may be sent to the funeral home at 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City, WI 53807.
The family would like to thank Tri State Dialysis, Dr. Anna Svircev, her nephrology team and Agrace Hospice for their care of Stella.
