Stephen Jared Calvert was born at the Hazel Green Hospital on March 7, 1940 to Alice Hale and William H. Calvert. Stephen attended Oberlin College in Ohio and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Master's Degree in Library Science. He spent the better part of 30 years living in New York City working at the New York Public Library and several companies in their library departments. Words were very special to him and after he returned to Benton he became a copywriter, often sought out be well-known authors. Stephen was very active in his hometown, working with the school system building quiz teams and holding a creative writing class for high school students. He was a member of the Benton Community Development Corporation. He is survived by a brother, William H. Calvert of Galena; many cousins here and in England; and the love of his life, his beloved cat Lily. Additionally, he is survived by hundreds of friends across the country. He was asset to everyone's life he touched and will be greatly missed. Stephen donated his body to the UW-Madison School of Medicine in order to help others. A memorial service will be held later this spring. Donations may be made in his memory to the Benton Public Library and Swindler's Ridge Museum in Benton.
