Walt was born to the late Guy and Doris (Bernhardt) Obershaw on September 28, 1930, in Cassville, WI. “Sonny”, as he was known, graduated from Cassville High School in 1948. He married his red-headed sweetheart, Bernadette R. Wallenhorst, on June 12, 1951. Walt retired from Dubuque Stamping and Manufacturing, Inc. where he served as corporate secretary and comptroller. Most, however, knew him from his tax and bookkeeping services. His fun job was catering with the Potosi brewery rolling bar. Walt’s true passions were always friends and family. Nothing made him happier that being a Cubmaster for 20 years and sharing scouting with his children, RVing across the US, pitching horseshoe on Tuesday evenings in Dickeyville, or playing pickleball and shuffleboard in Mesa, AZ. Walt was a member of past president of the Catholic Knights Branch 42 receiving a Golden Jubilarian Award in 2008. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants for 25 years and a member of Holy Ghost Church serving on the parish council and as bookkeeper. He also served as Dickeyville Village Clerk. He is survived by his wife, six of his children, Barb Hocker, of Galena, IL, Steve (Deb) Obershaw, of Platteville, WI, Gary (Monica) Obershaw, of Fishers, IN, Doug Obershaw, of Lenexa, KS, Terry (Jan) Obershaw, of Lenexa, KS, and Amy (Michael) Widener, of Elgin, SC; a daughter-in-law, Diane Obershaw of Platteville, WI; his brothers and sisters, Marilyn Tredor, of Beloit, WI, Patricia Smith, of West Salem, WI, Richard (Elaine) Obershaw, of Burnsville, MN, Sandra (Mike) Smyth, of Dubuque, IA, and Bruce Obershaw, of Guttenburg, IA; 17 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, David Obershaw; a brother Robert Obershaw; and a sister, Ruth Blackburn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Walter L. Obershaw Memorial Fund, PO Box 32, Dickeyville, WI 53808.
